Cumberland Foreside, Maine Solar Hot Water system

October 5, 2009

We installed a great 60 tube solar hot water system in Cumberland, Maine last week.  We started on Tuesday morning and were making hot water by 9:30 on Friday morning.  This system was tied in to an existing new boiler and is designed to work with the boiler on or off as the homeowner choses.  We expect to achieve an annual solar fraction for domestic hot water of around 85% with this system.  The carbon reduction for this system is about 2.5 tons annually!  Thanks team for a great week in Cumberland!  Don’t miss the photos.

  1. Can you define “solar fraction?” Maybe a blog entry describing what this is and why it matters?

    • Hi Lisa,

The short answer is this. A home with no solar hot water system has a 0% solar fraction and a home with a solar hot water system with no back up water heater has a 100% solar fraction. Resilient Homes strives to hit an 80% or better solar fraction for it’s clients. I’ll do a blog post dedicated to this fairly soon.

Thanks for asking me to clarify this!
